Vietnam registered the highest growth in the digital economy, in all Southeast Asia, back in 2022. This was from $18 billion in 2021 to $23 billion in 2022 representing an impressive increase of nearly 28% (YoY). Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC), with the function of supporting Vietnam startups and the innovation ecosystem, indicates the country’s digital economy is expected to grow, on average, 2 times faster than the its GDP right through to 2030 and beyond. This is as the Vietnamese government has taken a proactive approach to support the growth of the digital economy in order for it to account for 20% and 30% of the GDP by the years 2025 and 2030 consecutively as planned by the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
Vietnam has a young population with a great percentage of tech-savvy individuals, who are eager to adopt new technologies and innovations. This enthusiasm is encouraged by the country’s robust STEM education system that creates a pool of highly skilled tech professionals well trained from high-quality public and international universities. The country is poised to establish itself as industry’s emerging regional as well as global tech and talent hub in just a few short years. As a result, many international companies have sought to establish development centers on the basis of both ODC and BOT models and have increasingly worked with Vietnam’s IT providers in recent years. Application software developers in the country are leading the region. 7 out of 20 most frequently downloded apps in Southeast Asia is originated in Vietnam according to application data and analytics firm Data.ai. A.T. Kearney, a market researcher in the United States, ranks Vietnam among the top five most attractive destinations for IT outsourcing services.
